In the early days, a charivari (pronounced “shivaree“) would be reserved for an unpopular marriage. But over the years it became just another part of a wedding celebration. Janet remembers one being held in the County as recently as the early 1970s.

Sir John, Eh Macdonald — another True Tale of Prince Edward by Janet Kellough

John A. Macdonald, first prime minister of Canada, lived for three years at Glenora, where his father operated the grist mill. Later, the family moved to Kingston, but in 1833, Macdonald returned to Picton to take over his cousin’s law practice.

A few years later, when he announced that he was taking up a practice in Kingston, the citizens of Picton offered him £100 if he’d stay in Prince Edward. He declined. Apparently he had something else he wanted to do.
